employment from
Which govt branch or legal area should I pursue my case of wrongful termination from Employment?

I was just recently terminated from employment without severance. The reason sighted was my inability to perform in a function which was handed after two rounds of restructuring and for which I had no qualification or training. I believe I have a strong case and supporting facts. Since this is not an open discrimination or retaliation against complaint/family leave case it is hard to wet the appetitie of a lawyer.

Which avenue should I pursue? Need some good advise.

Have you even talked to a lawyer? Don’t assume that they won’t take the case because it isn’t “juicy”.

Other than that, you probably should talk to the department of labor for your state (or whatever they call it where you live). But since most of the U.S. is “at-will” employment, it probably will not go very far.

BACKGROUND MATERIAL FOR TEACHERS, Old Testament Bible Survey Course, Genesis — Esther

$19.22

BACKGOUND MATERIAL FOR TEACHERS, Book One, surveys the first seventeen Old Testament books for Bible teachers of youth and adults. Teachers must build a firm foundation for studying/teaching the Old Testament by answering ten questions:What is the Old Testament? Who wrote the Old Testament? Where, When, Why and How was the Old Testament written? What are three major features of the Old Testament: Revelation, Inspiration and Preservation? How should we study the Word of God? Why should you memorize the Word of God? When should one read the Word of God?Teachers must also build a personal knowledge through surveying the Old Testament utilizing four areas of study: INTRODUCTORY MATERIAL for the first two sections of the Old Testament; BACKGROUND INFORMATION about the author and book; “TEACHER’S STUDY GUIDE” for each of the 17 books; PRESENTATION MATERIAL for teachers [a teaching survey presented by a Scripture verse or passage].Following high school, a Bachelor of Science degree was received from Piedmont College, Demorest, GA plus a Georgia Teacher’s Professional Certificate. Then came the Army Security Agency and three years later came employment with the National Security Agency, Washington, DC. Meeting Edith Campen from North Carolina led to marriage, February 1, 1957.A year after marriage, God called me to the ministry. Graduating from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, TX with a Bachelor of Divinity (updated to Masters of Divinity) and Masters in Religious Education (updated to Masters of Arts), God directed me to serve Him.For some 50 years, it was a pleasure to serve God and people in churches and classrooms as Minister of Youth, Minister of Education, Minister of Education/Administration, and Minister of Pastoral Care. It was a joy to teach this Old Testament Bible Survey Course to ninth grade students at Cypress Community Christian School, Houston, TX

 Globalisation, State and Labour

Globalisation, State and Labour

$168

The world is undergoing enormous change involving politics, the economy and society, however the position and place of the state and the significance of state policy in this process is heavily contested. Globalisation, State and Labour presents a timely opportunity to review and re-assess the modern state in regard to labor.Using major studies from four countries (UK, Denmark, Australia and New Zealand) the contributors to this volume challenge many preconceptions regarding globalization and labor organization including the notions that the state is being marginalized by the processes of globalization and trade unions are becoming irrelevant. The essays, written by leading researchers in the area, develop a new theoretical framework which puts work, workers and their organizations at the heart of analyzing state restructuring. This book is an important corrective to much recent work on work, employment and restructuring and the role of organized labor. Combining a new theoretical approach with comparative analysis this book will be of vital interest to anyone concerned with globalization debate, the future of the state and organized labor.

”Advancing the kingdom”: Missionaries and Americanization in Puerto Rico, 1898–1930s.

$49.99

This dissertation examines the role of Protestant missionaries in Americanizing Puerto Rico from 1898 into the 1930s. It contends that Americanization was a dynamic, contingent, multi-directional, and contradictory process that had unintended consequences. These included the development of insular nationalism and Puerto Ricans’ employment of Americanization’s liberal ideology to make claims against the missionary establishment and the colonial state. Demonstrating that Protestants functioned as an advance guard for the colonial state in the areas of education and health care, it nevertheless argues that many missionaries began to question and then sharply criticized the entire civilizing project because of its harmful effects on most Puerto Ricans’ living and working conditions and on the island’s natural environment. It also argues that, in addition to its disciplinary aspects, the missionary project had emancipatory effects, including an expansion of the public sphere in terms of content and participation and the introduction of new social and occupational roles for women.;By focusing on relations between non-elite actors, this dissertation contributes to understanding how imperial relations were constructed on the ground. Though sharing fundamental goals with the colonial state, missionaries, unlike colonial officials, spoke Spanish and interacted with Puerto Ricans of all classes. Additionally, women missionaries played an active, highly visible role in this civilizing venture. This study examines missionary reform efforts and Puerto Rican responses to them, paying particular attention to the ways that iv missionary and local understandings of race, class, and gender shaped the outcomes of those efforts. It argues that local social and material conditions, ideologies, and practices significantly shaped missionaries’ methods and accomplishments or failures. ''Biting temptation'': An examination of the Eden myth in the Southern fiction of William Faulkner, Alice Walker, and Toni Morrison.

”Biting temptation”: An examination of the Eden myth in the Southern fiction of William Faulkner, Alice Walker, and Toni Morrison.

$49.99

This study argues that through their use of allusion, William Faulkner, Alice Walker, and Toni Morrison respond to interpretations of the Eden myth that were used to substantiate oppressive practices in Southern culture. Using Ziva-Ben Porat’s definition of allusion, I contend that Faulkner, Walker, and Morrison reopen the myth for reexamination, and, in the case of Walker and Morrison, revise the myth. After delineating the historical uses of the myth to support race and gender hierarchies in Southern society, I discuss Faulkner’s, Walker’s, and Morrison’s allusions to the Eden myth in their novels of Southern experience. Faulkner alludes to the creation and fall in his depiction of Thomas Sutpen of Absalom, Absalom!, whose actions bring Sutpen’s Hundred to fruition and then to ruin. In The Sound and the Fury, Faulkner again alludes to the Eden myth, this time evoking Eve in his rendering of Caddy Compson. Unlike the sociopolitical interpretations of the myth, Faulkner’s employment of the Eden myth underscores the injustice of race and gender oppressions. Alice Walker’s allusions to the Eden myth in The Color Purple perform this service as well, but Walker more candidly indicts Southern religion for its complicity in domination. Walker in The Color Purple rejects an anthropomorphic god and presents an alternate African version of the Eden myth which likens the impulse to subjugate others to the serpent in the garden. Toni Morrison, too, alludes to Eden in ways that expose the oppressions inherent in Southern religious culture. Her use of allusion in Beloved condemns the Southern practice of slavery by ripping the facade from the plantation idyll, exposing the plantation as a perversely evil garden. Her novel Paradise further explores the idea of Edenic spaces spoiled by patriarchal religious values and racial exclusion. Finally, all three novelists challenge the authority of master-narratives like the Eden myth. By providing multiple versions of the events in

”Lily Park” for symphony orchestra.

$49.99

Composers have long been interested in authentic materials from their own national heritage. Many composers favored folk-based melodies and rhythms. Bela Bartok, for example, collected volumes of Hungarian folk and gypsy melodies throughout his life. Igor Stravinsky’s three ballets (Firebird, Petrushka, and The Rite of Spring) are also famous for their employment of folk melodies and primitive rhythms. American composers such as Charles Ives and Aaron Copland represented ‘Americana’ through the use of American pop music, jazz, and folk songs in their compositions. Much of the music of composers who emigrated to foreign countries represents strong implications of nationalism. These composers’ efforts to remember their origins, as well as nostalgia for their native culture, were expressed in their music. These qualities appear most interestingly in Asian composers such as Toru Takemitsu and Isang Yun. Despite the drastic difference between Asian and Western music, the two contrasting idioms are handled similarly by these two composers. They not only use non-Western musical materials such as folk melodies and rhythms, but also employ Asian titles, concepts, and traditional instruments to represent Asian inspiration in their music.;The composition Lily Park consists of three movements, entitled Wind Bell, Goblin Lights, and Rock of Ages . The three movements are based on my personal impressions of the cemetery Lily Park, located near Deagu, Korea, where all my grandparents are buried. In this composition, Western musical idioms are integrated with the composer’s Asian musical heritage. The concept of Lily Park , which is purely non-Western in origination, is realized by utilizing compositional techniques and concepts that have been developed by Western composers, such as tone color, tonality, pitch-class set theory, and serialism, with an ensemble that consists of Western instruments. These ideas are combined with Asian materials such as exotic scales, extended

This study takes a longer view of the periods before, during, and after emancipation to show the changes and continuities that marked the transition to freedom in the District of Columbia; the national capital but also an unmistakably Southern city. Throughout this period, the District acted as a "city of refuge" for African Americans, both enslaved and free. Successive generations of African Americans migrated to the city in search of a meaningful freedom, which they consistently defined as the ability to form independent households and to control the conditions of their labor. The mass migration of freed men and women to Southern cities like the District of Columbia during the Civil War and after emancipation meant that a considerable number of African Americans transformed from slave to free laborers and rural to urban workers at the same time. In the District of Columbia, the transition to free labor was marked more by continuity than change, both in the continued limitations to black urban employment and in the ways that free African Americans adapted to these conditions. My work in reconstructing the household structures of African Americans both before and after emancipation provides a comparative perspective, which reveals that families employed similar strategies in their struggle to adapt to the racial and gender constraints of the urban labor economy. As the opportunities of black men to support their families continued to be restricted, men and women together negotiated and renegotiated gender and labor roles within their own households in order to support their families and communities. The main difference in the experience of antebellum free blacks and the experience of emancipated former slaves was the existence of federal agencies who sought to direct the transition to freedom during the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Excerpt: Berwick-upon-Tweed is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. The constituency of Berwick-upon-Tweed is located in the county of Northumberland. It includes at its northern-most point the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed itself and stretches south, to cover the towns of Alnwick and Amble. The Northumberland coast forms its eastern boundary. Its length is roughly 50 miles (80 km), with an area of 2,310 square kilometres. Predominantly rural in character, this constituency is the most northerly in England, and one of the most sparsely populated, having only 57,000 electors. Following their review of parliamentary representation in Northumberland, the Boundary Commission for England have made only minor changes to the existing Berwick constituency. A proposal to re-name the historic seat “Berwick-upon-Tweed and Mid Northumberland” was rejected for whilst being geographically accurate it was thought unwieldy. The electoral wards used to form the slightly modified constituency are; Rural in nature, sparse of population and with agriculture as a major source of employment, Berwick-upon-Tweed is at first sight a typical Conservative seat. However, it has been under the aegis of Liberal (later Liberal Democrat) Sir Alan Beith since 1973, and previously the area has been notable for its liberal leanings – both Sir William Beveridge (influential in the formation of the National Health Service) and Edward Grey (Foreign Secretary at the start of World War I, best remembered for the “lamps are going out all over Europe….” remark) have served this constituency. Sir Alan was first elected in a by-election, required as a res… More:

Excerpt: Hannah is an oratorio in three acts by Christopher Smart with a score composed by John Worgan. It was first performed in Haymarket theater 3 April 1764. It was supposed to have a second performance, but that performance was postponed and eventually cancelled over a lack of singers. A libretto was published for its run and a libretto with full score was published later that year. Hannah tells the story of Hannah and of her devotion to God which resulted in her being blessed with fertility by God. It was the first of two oratorio librettos written by Smart, the second being Abimelech. In 1763, Christopher Smart was released from Mr. Potter’s madhouse. While working on a translation of the Psalms and of Horace’s writings, Smart needed to earn money to support himself. He was encouraged to write a libretto in order to find employment by many of his friends who were involved with the theater and musical circles of London. The field of Oratorio appealed to Smart because of its financial benefits and its being grounded in the “sacred”. Smart defined an oratorio as: “a sacred opera; deducing its fable from scripture, as the opera itself does, from profane history. This species (if righly executed) is most admirably calculated to fulfill the great end of drama, to make men more virtuous; as it takes for its subject the actions of holy men, and consequently deals much in praises and addresses to the deity. I believe our oratorios at present in vogue, tho’ not very remarkable for poetical composition, have their good effect on the more rational and sober part of the audience. Yet what more universal and useful effects would this species of the drama produce, if it was to join true poetry, with true piety, and the sacred characters int… More:

Excerpt: Herodian or Herodianus of Syria (ca. 170240) was a minor Roman civil servant who wrote a colourful history in Greek titled History of the Empire from the Death of Marcus in eight books covering the years 180 to 238. His work is not entirely reliable although his relatively unbiased account of Elagabalus is more useful than that of Cassius Dio. He was a Greek (perhaps from Antioch) who appears to have lived for a considerable period of time in Rome, but possibly without holding any public office. From his extant work, we gather that he was still living at an advanced age during the reign of Gordianus III, who ascended the throne in 238. Beyond this, nothing is known of his life. Herodian writes (i.1.§ 3, ii.15.§ 7) that the events described in his history occurred during his lifetime. Photius (Codex 99) gives an outline of the contents of this work and passes a flattering encomium on the style of Herodian, which he describes as clear, vigorous, agreeable, and preserving a happy medium between an utter disregard of art and elegance and a profuse employment of the artifices and prettinesses which were known under the name of Atticism, as well as between boldness and bombast. He appears to have used Thucydides as a model to some extent, both for style and for the general composition of his work, often introducing speeches wholly or in part imaginary. In spite of occasional inaccuracies in chronology and geography, his narrative is in the main truthful and impartial. However, some charge him with showing too great a partiality for Pertinax. The dates of the birth and death of Herodian are unknown. All available information concerning his life is derived from what he himself wrote, so the evidence is scarce. One can assume that he must have reached… More:

A Biomass Future for the North American Great Plains

$71.04

The North American Great Plains is a major global breadbasket but its agriculture is stressed by drought, heat, damaging winds, soil erosion and declining ground water resources. Biomass production and processing on the Plains would partially restore a perennial vegetative cover and create employment opportunities. This book explores the possibility that the ecology and economy of the Plains region, and similar regions, would benefit from the introduction of perennial biomass crops.

A Biomass Future for the North American Great Plains: Toward Sustainable Land Use and Mitigation of Greenhouse Warming

$43.96

The Great Plains of North America is a major global breadbasket but its agriculture is stressed by drought, heat spells, damaging winds, soil erosion and declining ground water resources. The great inter-annual variability in crop production and declining rural populations weaken an economy already highly dependent upon government support. The region’s ecological fragility and economic weakness is attributed by many to removal of its original grass cover. Abandonment of agricultural cropping and restoration of the grass cover is one proposed solution to the region’s problems.Simulation models suggest that the agriculture and water resources of the Plains may be stressed even further as its climate changes because of global warming, which is due primarily to the emissions of greenhouse gases from fossil fuel combustion. This book explores the possibility that the ecology and economy of the Plains region (and similar regions) would benefit from the introduction of perennial biomass crops. Biomass production and processing on the Plains (possibly aided by genetic engineering) would partially restore a perennial vegetative cover and create new employment opportunities. Biomass also offers a means of reducing fossil fuel use, providing fuel to local power plants and a feedsk for production of cellulosic ethanol, a gasoline substitute. Interest in biofuels is growing rapidly in public, political and business circles with rising fossil fuel prices and because of a growing recognition of the need for energy independence in petroleum importing countries.

It was on December 15, 1928 when a boy by the name of Roel Krijgsman, also known as Roland Krygsman, was born to Dutch parents on the island of Goeree and Overflakkee in the southwest region of the Netherlands. It was depression time that not only affected the United States, but also in Europe and other parts of the World. Survival was only for the strong. The weak and timid would perish under the world’s oppression. It was a time that many would never forget. It was about survival, obtaining food, clothing, shelter, and achieving employment. Watching out for one another became a family affair. Work was scarce, along with food and money. The young and old alike persisted in their efforts to make ends meet. It is through the eyes and collective thoughts of this little boy from Holland that we are introduced to his more than ordinary life near the North Sea. As life goes on, many follow the same road from childhood to adulthood. It is through life changing circumstances that ultimately shape our well-being. What happens in our lives and what we learn will define us in what we become and achieve. The autobiography of Roland’s life is indeed extraordinary. The stories of his life, his loves, his adventures, and his quest to succeed in life are imaginable, but yet remind us of our human nature and our ever increasing need to live our lives to the fullest.Modernization was unheard of. There was no television, or modern appliances like a washer, dryer, and refrigerator. People were poor and many families were quite large. Roland came from a family of seven children. He was the second oldest of six brothers and one sister. As many families found out, each day was a struggle. For the Krygsman family, growing up during the depression period meant that they all needed to work together. Each child was to be treated equally. Each received just enough to survive. There was never abundance; only what each child would get from mother and father. Even grandpa and grandma

It was a cold evening in November, when Mrs. Seldon, seated by a small fire, was anxiously waiting for her only son, who had left in the morning to ascertain whether he could find employment in a counting house in the city of New-York. Mrs. Seldon was the widow of a clergyman, who died when his son was in the twelfth year of his age, leaving him and his mother with a few hundred dollars, and an excellent library. Mr. Seldon had spared no pains in Henry’s education; and, at the early age of ten years, he had become acquainted, not only with the general rudiments of the English, but had made considerable advancement in the Latin, Greek, and French languages. Henry Seldon was beautiful as the morning; his eye was keen as the young eagle’s, at the same time soft as the beams of the setting sun. His hair was black and glossy as the raven’s, his brow was lofty, his mouth sweet and fascinating, his nose aquiline, and the general contour of hia face classical. His form was elegance and grace, and all who saw him loved him. His father and mother’s existence seemed identified with his; they lived in their son, and next to their Saviour, they loved him. One Sabbath, after Mr. Seldon returned from church, he complained of indisposition. A physician was called ; life lingered until morning, when he breathed his last sigh upon the bosom of his wife, in the full hope of a glorious resurrection. Henry in vain strove to comfort his mother, who, for a few hours, was in a fearfuldelirium. So sudden had been the blow, that her frame, like a tree twisted by the tempest, could only recover from the shock by the slow application of time. After she became composed, she summoned every effort of her mind and body for her son. Alone, they pursued the course they considered

“The first time you get laid off you’re like, ‘Oh my God. What have I done wrong? Obviously I’ve done something wrong.’ And it happens a couple of times for various reasons and you go, ‘You know, I didn’t do anything, and not only that, this is a bump in the road. Something else will pop up.’ And sure enough it always does.”—from A Company of One Being laid off can be a traumatic event. The unemployed worry about how they will pay their bills and find a new job. In the American economy’s boom-and-bust business cycle since the 1980s, repeated layoffs have become part of working life. In A Company of One, Carrie M. Lane finds that the new culture of corporate employment, changes to the job search process, and dual-income marriage have reshaped how today’s skilled workers view unemployment. Through interviews with seventy-five unemployed and underemployed high-tech white-collar workers in the Dallas area over the course of the 2000s, Lane shows that they have embraced a new definition of employment in which all jobs are temporary and all workers are, or should be, independent “companies of one.” Following the experiences of individual jobseekers over time, Lane explores the central role that organized networking events, working spouses, and neoliberal ideology play in forging and reinforcing a new individualist, pro-market response to the increasingly insecure nature of contemporary employment. She also explores how this new perspective is transforming traditional ideas about masculinity and the role of men as breadwinners. Sympathetic to the benefits that this “company of one” ideology can hold for its adherents, Lane also details how it hides the true costs of an insecure workforce and makes collective and political responses to job loss and downward mobility unlikely.

A Comparison of the Trade Union Merger Process in Britain and Germany: Joining Forces?

A Comparison of the Trade Union Merger Process in Britain and Germany: Joining Forces?

$210

Trade unions in Europe are currently facing a series of challenges that stem from changes to regulatory and production regimes implemented by the state and employers, in order to compete in an increasingly internationalized economy. In response to these challenges, trade union movements have been dramatically restructuring; long-standing principles of organization have been jettisoned in an attempt to develop new structures. Central to this process of structural adaptation are the mergers of trade unions. This informative book focuses on the merger process in Britain and Germany and, uniquely, it reviews the wider implications of these developments – particularly for North America. As well as addressing the reasons for mergers, the book also examines the process whereby mergers are concluded, investigates the consequences, and analyses the costs and benefits of the post-merger organisation. Drawing on interviews conducted with senior policy-makers engaged in merger processes, this book explores the extent of internal union reform brought about by the merger process, and also identifies the implications of this reform for trade unions world-wide. Structured in distinct sections, this book covers topic such as:what distinguishes the British and German systems? trade union structures pre-merger issues settling the terms of the mergers post-merger developments. This book forms part of the Routledge Research in Employment Relations series featuring works of high academic merit drawn from a wide range of academic studies in the social sciences. It is a valuable resource for postgraduate students studying business and management, industrial employee relations, and trade unions.

A Comprehensive Guide to Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults: Research, Diagnosis and Treatment

A Comprehensive Guide to Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults: Research, Diagnosis and Treatment

$79.95

A Comprehensive Guide to Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults begins by addressing the history of ADD and the evolution of our understanding of the disorder. The neurobiology of ADD is examined, laying a solid foundation for the clinician to develop a scientific understanding of this complex syndrome. The assessment and differential diagnosis of ADD is examined from the perspectives of a variety of specialists in the field. This includes an exploration of the interrelationships between attention deficit disorder and other neurodevelopmental disabilities that may interact with ADD to affect cognitive functioning, and an examination of the connections between ADD and a host of psychiatric conditions. Also covered is the process of differential diagnosis from a neurological perspective, which will help the nonmedically trained clinician to better determine when a complete neurological evaluation seems warranted in the assessment process. Authors examine ADD with and without hyperactivity and describe a wide range of assessment tools that can be useful in developing a full diagnostic picture of different conditions that must be addressed in treating adults with the disorder. A wealth of experience, highly practical suggestions, and an optimistic outlook are the hallmark of the section on treatment. The authors strongly recommend a multifaceted treatment plan combining medication, psychotherapy, and addressing the pervasive self-esteem issues that typically haunt the adult whose condition has gone untreated. The volume concludes with a discussion of the legal implications of the diagnosis of ADD in adults as it pertains to education and employment, the important role of support groups foradults with ADD, and a thought-provoking examination of current and future research including the need for increased public recognition of ADD in adults.

CHAPTER IV., SECTION I. A claim of rights is an unconscious recognition of an invisible Being, whence they are derived, by whose judgments they are defined, limited and enlarged, and through whose power they are enforced. Rights, primarily derived, are recognized secondarily and in the person, as inherent. They flow from the same fountain as wants. They constitute the material embodiment of wants. They furnish wants with food, clothing and shelter. They are an outcome from the same creative power. A man who has wants, by virtue of his wants, has rights. Wants existing, rights, opening the avenues of satisfactory supply, are consequential, indispensable, inevitable. ” No need go to men for guarantee of rights ; their guarantee is one’s manhood. We may combine with others to secure and maintain them, but in our combination, while we re-establish for others, we but recover for ourselves. God having given them, society should assert and maintain them. A considerate generalization of rights involves three parties. First, the Creator; second, society; third, the individual. Being parts of a great whole, each may be said to have rights upon itself and the others. The Creator has rights on Himself, on society and on the individual. Society has rights itself on the Creator and on the individual. The individual has rights on himself, on society and on the Creator. We are dealing principally with the rights of man and of society. The chief end of human rights, is to assure, through effort, adequate supply of want. An assumption of rights without impulse to effort, is impertinent. Effort, or desire for employment in production, is the chief and necessary contingent of rights. A disposition to effort having been abandoned, rights cannot be logically maintained. When effo

A Critical Essay on Modern Macroeconomic Theory

A Critical Essay on Modern Macroeconomic Theory

$20

Macroeconomics began as the study of large-scale economic pathologies such as prolonged depression, mass unemployment, and persistent inflation. In the early 1980s, rational expectations and new classical economics dominated macroeconomic theory, with the result that such pathologies can hardly be discussed within the vocabulary of the theory. This essay evolved from the authors’ profound disagreement with that trend. It demonstrates not only how the new classical view got macroeconomics wrong, but alsohow to go about doing macroeconomics the right way.Hahn and Solow argue that what was originally offered as a normative model based on perfect foresight and universal perfect competition — useful for predicting what an ideal, omniscient planner should do — has been almost casually transformed into a model for interpreting real macroeconomic behavior, leading to Panglossian economics that does not reflect actual experience.Following an explanation of microeconomic foundations, chapters introduce the basic elements for a better macro model. The model is simple, but combined with the appropriate model of the labor market it can say useful things about the fluctuation of employment, the correlation between wages and employment, and the role for corrective monetary policy.

John Mills provides a critical survey of the way economics has developed. He argues that the main goal of economics should be to show how to achieve a combination of economic growth, full employment, low inflation, avoidance of extreme poverty, and sustainability. From the ancient world up to the late 20th century, that it has failed to do so is neither inevitable nor accidental–It has failed because of a combination of intellectual error and the effects of social and political pressure, which Mills claims could and should have been avoided.

Tommy Watson grew up in the Five Points area of Denver, Colorado, this was a crime-ridden neighborhood wrought with gang violence, drugs and poverty. Living in this type of neighborhood would create any number of obstacles and challenges for a young African-American male; however, Tommy’s biggest challenges were faced behind closed doors. Many of the negative influences insidiously crept into his home. Throughout his childhood, both of his parents were addicted to heroin and neither had a legal means of employment. As a result, family life for Tommy and his siblings was quite chaotic and they often found themselves unsupervised and uncared for. In part due to help of others and also through his own personal drive, he was able to avoid the traps of drug addiction and gang affiliation that eventually consumed the lives of some of his siblings. A Fatal Agenda- The Social, Economic And Democratic Consequences Of Neoliberalism

A Fatal Agenda- The Social, Economic And Democratic Consequences Of Neoliberalism

$64

Attempts to expand and globalize the free market over the past quartercenturyhave led to an intensely polarized society in the United States. Ineconomic terms, American workers are systematically victimized by an agendathat seeks to put more money into wealthy pockets and corporate vaults. The common practice of outsourcing jobs to foreign labor markets byAmerican corporations has left hundreds of thousands of American workerssearching for meaningful employment. On the social front, poor and workingAmericans are realizing a dire sense of hopelessness derived from a domesticpolicy agenda that aims to end social welfare. The introduction of welfarereform laws that place unreasonable demands on poor and workingAmericans have ripped away any reliable safety net during a time where millionsof workers are in need of valuable assistance. In addition to theseeconomic and social consequences, the neoliberal agenda has also launchedan all-out attack on the democratic institution in America. By encouragingthe practice of corporate lobbying and campaign financing, neoliberalism hascreated a political landscape where the interests of corporations take precedenceover the interests of the people. Consequently, the American electoratehas been rendered impotent in a political game where money equals democraticpower.

Everyone knew Len Dreyer, a handyman for hire in the Park near Niniltna, Alaska, but no one knew anything else about him. Even Kate Shugak, who was planning to ask him to help build a small second cabin on her property, knew him. But she, the Park’s unofficial P.I., seems to have known less about him than anyone. When Len Dreyer’s body is discovered, frozen solid, in the path of a receding glacier with a hole from a shotgun blast in his chest, no one even noticed that he was missing for months. Alaska State Trooper Jim Chopin asks Kate to help him dig into Dreyer’s background, in the hope of finding some motive for his murder. She takes the case, mindful of the need for gainful employment as she copes with her responsibility for Johnny, the teenage boy in her care and a constant reminder of his father, her dead lover. Little does she imagine that by trying to provide for him she just might put him right in the path of danger.

The intermediate period of what has heen emphatically called the Great Rebellion, as well as that of the Commonwealth and the Protectorate which succeeded it, although most highly important in their political and social consequences, were too much occupied with the exciting occurrences of the day, to admit of any matters so purely domestic as the relief of the poor being entered upon or considered.
