Although the Transit Telescope had been designed and constructed by the astronomers that used it, a fully-steerable telescope would need to be professionally designed and constructed; the first challenge was to find an engineer willing to do the job. This turned out to be Charles Husband, whom Lovell first met on 8 September 1949. The bearings became the two main altitude rotator bearings of the telescope, with the appropriate parts of the telescope being designed around them. Husband presented the first drawings of the proposed giant, fully-steerable radio telescope in 1950. After refinements, these plans were detailed in a “Blue Book”, which was presented to the DSIR on 20 March 1951; the proposal was approved in March 1952. Construction began on 3 September 1952. The foundations for the telescope were completed on 21 May 1953 after being sunk 90 ft into the ground. it then took until Mid-March 1954 to get the double railway lines completed due to their required accuracy. Learner-centered classrooms under the standardization era. $49.99 This was a qualitative research study in which four primary teachers participated. The main problem was that teachers felt pressured by the demands and requirements from the mandated standardized testing, curriculum, pacing guides, and teaching methods to prepare students for the high-stakes testing and grade level expectations. Traditional teacher development workshops were viewed as ineffective and inconvenient because the teaching and learning strategies they promoted were not useful or practical. This study was intended to examine the extent to which the teachers were able to shift their pedagogy from traditional knowledge transmission to learner-centered teaching and learning practices, when experiencing a job-embedded and on-site peer coaching professional development model over one academic year. Another goal was to find out the extent to which teachers changed their perceptions, beliefs, assumptions and practices to provide an equitable and supportive learning environment for all students. At the same time, it aimed to explore and explain the barriers and facilitators that influenced changes in their thinking and practice. The study involved four bilingual education teachers at the primary grade level, in one school. For the professional development that I led, teachers participated in grade level meetings and critical dialog sessions. I also modeled lessons for them to observe and gave them on-site peer coaching support. Teachers were interviewed three times during the study. They were formally observed several times and a qualitative write-up protocol used. The data from the grade level meetings, informal observations and critical dialog sessions was recorded in a personal journal. For the most part, teachers’ thinking and pedagogy practice shifted from the traditional knowledge transmission to learner-centered ways of teaching and learning. A burnt out and washed up police detective who drinks and smokes too much and was just letting life pass by, hoping one day it would all change and life would get better. On little more than an impulse I decide to leave my well paid job in England, register my rather dull profile on a Thai internet dating site, sell my house, leave all my family and friends behind and go to live in Thailand. I must be mad, it’s a crazy gamble to risk everything but I was prepared to do it. I met Jee, a girl half my age. She comes from Udon Thani, a place that I had never heard of in an area I knew nothing about, the Isaan area in the Northeast of Thailand, a girl who seemed to be everything that I was looking for and more. A strong quiet character who was prepared to give this old farang another chance at life. But, and it’s a big but, I know I am experiencing a culture shock. I feel lonely, bored and unable to communicate. I’m often confused and misunderstandings are an everyday occurrence. I don’t know what I’m doing here and I think I’ve made a big mistake. The problem is I really quite like Jee. I find out things about myself as well as Jee. I start to embrace a Thai culture that I hadn’t previously noticed as a tourist and have an understanding of ‘sanuk’ (fun) and ‘mai pen rai’ (never mind). I know it’s going to take me longer to come to terms with some other everyday things in Thai culture, like eating frogs, snails, insects and bugs. Teachers, mandates, and site mediation: Influences on satisfaction and dissatisfaction in two elementary schools. $49.99 This dissertation describes a study of how educational mandates affect what happens in schools and classrooms and the impact on teacher job satisfaction. An interview guide was designed incorporating items to include information on Satisfiers and Dissatisfiers in the Profession, Teacher Control in Decision Making and Implementation, and Changes in Teaching Life. A specific focus is placed in the study on teacher control, the teacher work environment, and job satisfaction. Interview questions were included to capture differences and similarities in these areas at the classroom, site, and larger domains, including state and federal levels. Participants were 12 teachers from 2 Title I elementary schools, 1 regular and 1 dual immersion charter school, with high minority and high English language learner populations. The study indicates that teachers find satisfaction through several aspects concerning students, such as teaching, student learning, and influencing students (Lortie, 1975). Dissatisfiers were wide ranging and included lack of professional autonomy, external demands, and pastoral care (looking after the personal and social wellbeing of children under their care). The two groups of teachers in different schools related a difference in their influence as decision makers concerning content taught. The regular school teachers reported having a much smaller proportion of control when considering the influence from the larger domain. Teachers reported few areas where they desire more control but many instances of participation in areas where they had desired control, suggesting a more action-based schema rather than a theoretical schema. Analysis of changes in teaching life showed differences between the two groups. Regular public school teachers talked more about content and assessments while charter public school teachers talked more about support and development of profession.
