The statistics are frightening. The National Association of Colleges and Employers’ (NACE) 2009 Student Survey shows that just 19.7 percent of 2009 graduates who applied for a job actually have one. And, according to NACE’s Job Outlook 2010 Fall Preview, employers expect to hire 7 percent fewer graduates from the college Class of 2010 than they hired from the Class of 2009. What’s worse, this issue cannot completely be blamed on a poor economy. Entry-level hiring should have increased because many employers have laid off more expensive, experienced talent. So what’s preventing new talent from entering the career marketplace?Millennials–those individuals born between 1977 and 1997 and also known as Generation Y–often expect college to teach them how to find jobs and are disappointed upon finding out this is not the case. And the career advice they do receive comes from “authority figures” (i.e., campus career center staff), whom they do not believe or trust. These graduates need practical and insightful guidance from someone who knows the challenges they face and how to overcome them.”#ENTRYLEVELtweet Book01″ by career expert Heather R. Huhman is a must-read for college students and recent grads who want to learn what it takes to find, land, and succeed in an entry-level career. In 140 tweet-style tips, Huhman provides a roadmap of what to do to impress hiring managers, how to create stand-out “career tools,” and how to network during your job search with confidence in yourself and what you have to offer potential employers.Want to get ahead of your college colleagues? Get your copy of ‘#ENTRYLEVELtweet Book01′ now, and let it guide you from classroom to career inapproximately fifteen minutes–the perfect length of time for a busy student or job seeker.’#ENTRYLEVELtweet Book01′ is part of the THINKaha series whose 100-page books contain 140 well-thought-out quotes (tweets/ahas).

 A Rock Candy Dream

A Rock Candy Dream

$3.99

The Great Depression is a period that most young people consider ancient history, but their own grandparents probably remember it well, for the country was in shock and nothing afterward was ever the same. This story, told through the eyes of an eleven-year-old girl, is an account of what it was like in those dust-bowl days when thousands of people migrated west in search of the promised land: California. Whole families made the trek across Route 66, and their children went with them. One of them was Meg Buckland.Evicted from their home in Missouri, Meg and her father made their way westward in search of a future they could hardly imagine. But like many others they had dreams of a land where there would be jobs, and pay, and a new home. And maybe even some of those fantastic joys described in the popular song “The Big Rock Candy Mountain.” It’s safe to say that nothing turned out as they expected.

 An Embarrassment Of Mangoes

An Embarrassment Of Mangoes

$14.95

Under the Tuscan Sun meets the wide-open sea . . . An Embarrassment of Mangoes is a delicious chronicle of leaving the type-A lifestyle behind — and discovering the seductive secrets of life in the Caribbean. Who hasn’t fantasized about chucking the job, saying goodbye to the rat race, and escaping to some exotic destination in search of sun, sand, and a different way of life? Canadians Ann Vanderhoof and her husband, Steve did just that. In the mid 1990s, they were driven, forty-something professionals who were desperate for a break from their deadline-dominated, career-defined lives. So they quit their jobs, rented out their house, moved onto a 42-foot sailboat called Receta ( recipe, in Spanish), and set sail for the Caribbean on a two-year voyage of culinary and cultural discovery. In lavish detail that will have you packing your swimsuit and dashing for the airport, Vanderhoof describes the sun-drenched landscapes, enchanting characters and mouthwatering tastes that season their new lifestyle. Come along for the ride and be seduced by Caribbean rhythms as she and Steve sip rum with their island neighbors, hike lush rain forests, pull their supper out of the sea, and adapt to life on island time. Exchanging business clothes for bare feet, they drop anchor in 16 countries — 47 individual islands — where they explore secluded beaches and shop lively local markets. Along the way, Ann records the delectable dishes they encounter — from cracked conch in the Bahamas to curried lobster in Grenada, from Dominican papaya salsa to classic West Indian rum punch — and incorporates these enticing recipes into the text so that readers can participate in the adventure.Almost as good as making the journey itself, An Embarrassment of Mangoes is an intimate account that conjures all the irresistible beauty and bounty from the Bahamas to Trinidad — and just may compel you to make a rash decision that will land you in paradise. From the Publisher: Barbara Ehrenreich’s Nickel and Dimed explored the lives of low-wage workers. Now, in Bait and Switch, she enters another hidden realm of the economy: the shadowy world of the white-collar unemployed. Armed with a plausible r sum of a professional in transition, she attempts to land a middle-class job undergoing career coaching and personality testing, then trawling a series of EST-like boot camps, job fairs, networking events, and evangelical job-search ministries. She gets an image makeover, works to project a winning attitude, yet is proselytized, scammed, lectured, and again and again rejected. Bait and Switch highlights the people who’ve done everything right gotten college degrees, developed marketable skills, and built up impressive r sum s yet have become repeatedly vulnerable to financial disaster, and not simply due to the vagaries of the business cycle. Today’s ultra-lean corporations take pride in shedding their surplus employees plunging them, for months or years at a stretch, into the twilight zone of white-collar unemployment, where job searching becomes a full-time job in itself. As Ehrenreich discovers, there are few social supports for these newly disposable workers and little security even for those who have jobs. Like the now classic Nickel and Dimed, Bait and Switch is alternately hilarious and tragic, a searing expos of economic cruelty where we least expect it.

Black Days, Black Dust: The Memories of an African American Coal Miner

Black Days, Black Dust: The Memories of an African American Coal Miner

$37.66

Among those drawn to jobs in the booming West Virginia coal mines during the first part of the twentieth century were thousands of African Americans. They proved successful in this industry — despite low wages and discrimination at the hands of mine operators. This book, the first published memoir by an African American coal miner, is a stirring tale of survival and achievement. Bob Armstead interweaves stories of family and community with a broad history of underground mining to paint an engrossing picture of the work, the dangers, and the drama of that industry.Armstead remembers his childhood, growing up in a segregated coal camp during the Great Depression, and he recalls his family’s efforts to confront economic challenges while also dealing with the reality of racism. His father worked as a horse driver in the mines until machinery put him out of work. Even though, as a youth, Armstead saw how his father had suffered, he himself went to work in the mines in 1947. From his first day on the job, coal mining fascinated him. He initally labored in a timber crew, shoring up mine roofs. Then, in a life peppered with mine closings and layoffs that sent him from one place to another in search of work, he eventually became a mining machine operator, a foreman over predominantly white crews, and finally a safety inspector.Black Days, Black Dust evokes a vivid sense of a coal miner’s life. Armstead’s recollections of his father provide descriptions of primitive mining methods in the 1930s and grueling twelve-hour work days. Armstead’s memories of his own career document his enthusiasm for mining and the work ethic that earned him responsible positions in the mines.Engagingly told,Armstead’s story is both a rich historical document and a moving portrait of one man’s life and how he overcame adversity.

I used to wear company-branded baseball caps. I ironed my jeans for casual Fridays. I smiled stiffly as my boss told insipid stories about his daughter’s soccer games. I’ve spent the last three years sleeping until 3 p.m. and getting drunk at dive bars on your tax dollars. I feel much better now. What’s my secret? Getting CANNED! From blue collar to white collar, minimum wage to six figures, Franklin Schneider has held every type of job—briefly. He’s detasseled corn in Iowa, served time at a doomed Internet start-up, and for one shining moment became the “Most Successful Telemarketer in America.” But his search for a fairly compensated, fulfilling position free of pointless drudgery taught him one thing: Such a job does not exist. And if it did, his boss would probably be an a**hole. If you’ve ever wanted to go out to lunch and never come back… If you’ve ever wanted to respond honestly when a boss asks, “Do you think I’m stupid?”… If you’ve ever considered restarting a smoking habit just for an excuse to leave the building every thirty minutes… This is the book for you. “I am sure that everyone who is not a Marxist can agree, Franklin Schneider is the type of person this country can do without.” —Charles Signorile, ConstitutionallyRight.com “A towering stylist and a great observer of our times and our culture.” —Erik Wemple, Washington City Paper Franklin Schneider has been a contributor at the Washington City Paper for several years and has written about everything from honeybee Armageddon to street-racing arsonists. His features about being fired repeatedly were some of the most popular in the paper’s history. He studied writing at the Writer’s Workshop at the University of Iowa. He lives in Washington, D.C.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Charles Burnett is a MacArthur Award-winning American independent filmmaker. Like many black families, his parents decided to leave Mississippi for California in the Great Migration, in search of jobs in the booming defense industry and better living conditions, including the chance to vote. Burnett grew up in Los Angeles, California in Watts. He earned a bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of California, Los Angeles. Burnett’s style is largely contemplative. His most original work concentrates on the lives of the African-American middle-class, who were seldom treated in films. He made his first feature, Killer of Sheep, while a graduate student at UCLA. Though the film was not given a wide release at the time and remained hard-to-come-by through subsequent decades, it became a touchstone film among connoisseurs in American cinema. In 1990, the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Community and educational opportunity in the US: The relative utility of technology and digital literacy in a transcultural community.

Community and educational opportunity in the US: The relative utility of technology and digital literacy in a transcultural community.

$49.99

This ethnobiographic study explores the ways in which five low income transmigrants living in an urban Mid-Atlantic transcultural community made use of technology and digital literacy. Specifically, the study focuses on the ways in which participants defined the purpose, importance, and utility of technology and digital literacy in their lives. The stories reveal complex and often heroic efforts to become digitally literate and apply technological learning to their obligations as parents, breadwinners, and community participants in widely dispersed social networks that cross family, community, and national boundaries. Their stories reveal: (1) the desire for digital literacy to participate in our modern society; (2) limitations in concepts of access and equity as currently conceived in scholarly literature; (3) trust as a key component of successful programs; and (4) the importance of technology in sustaining transcultural networks.;The voices of the participants reveal that immigrants recognize the need for technology training, not only for jobs, but also to aid and enhance their everyday life. They shared the need for training to include: basic classroom skills instruction for children; learning opportunities for adults; programs that include authentic tasks and design features that consider cost, time and day of the week, location, language options, and word of mouth confirmation regarding the quality of content and trust in instructors and training location. Their search for safety extends to protecting their personal information and children by acquiring cyber safety and security knowledge.;This study adds to transcultural scholarly work, and also expands both digital divide and digital inequity literature that only rarely focuses on the relationship between participants and transcultural community constructs. Increasingly, computer based forms of communication are taking the place of letters, telephone and travel to maintain and expand ties to family and

 Daniel Van Meter

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Daniel Van Meter was an eccentric, best known for his Tower of Wooden Pallets that became a cultural historic monument. Van Meter was life-long bachelor. He had no career and held odd jobs throughout his life. He was once called as a witness in a murder trial since he found what was left of the victim while going through a trash bin in search of cardboard boxes. He always claimed that if it weren’t for eccentric people like him gathering junk (sometimes known as “historical memorabilia”) there wouldn’t be any need for museums. Van Meter later lived on Magnolia Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, California. He had purchased the property in 1947 and by 1988 was the only house left on the block. The area had been fully developed into condominium complexes, a fire station, a private school and office buildings. It is near the Sepulveda Dam Recreational Area. Van Meter and his brothers had turned the property into a type of junkyard.

 Detroit Tales

Detroit Tales

$22.95

The stories in Detroit Tales are tales about urban, working-class America. People struggle both to remain in the city and to escape the city. The three central motifs of this collection are the city, the workplace, and the automobile. In their cars, people negotiate the territory between work and home. Conflicts arise with the characters’ impulses to veer off their well-worn paths. What can they do? Where can they go? What forces pull them away, and what forces pull them back? The characters search for what can provide them with spiritual sustenance. Often, relief from the drudgery of their daily lives is provided in the fleeting dazzle of fireworks or Christmas lights, but they take what they can. If these stories have one unifying theme, it is that escape is not the answer. When the pulls of friendship and love and personal responsibility draw us back to our ordinary homes and our ordinary jobs, we must trust those pulls, and we must lead those lives with as much dignity as we can muster.

Mary’s been abandoned by guys before, but her boyfriend takes a new route–he drops dead. While searching for a place to scatter his ashes, Mary encounters his crazy mother, former girlfriends, and his deranged dog, and eventually becomes a bass player in an all-woman punk band. From the Publisher Mary Bellanova’s life in the East Village has little direction — a string of temp jobs, a long-unfinished collection of short stories, and hazy nights at the local bars. Then her boyfriend, Primo, changes everything. Other guys have abandoned Mary, but Primo chooses the most original route — he drops dead. Left to her own devices, Mary morphs into an urban heroine, boldly navigating city life, searching for a place to scatter Primo’s ashes, dealing with his crazy mother and ex-girlfriends, and reluctantly opening her home to Primo’s deranged dog, Numb. And suddenly, in a New York minute, Mary is a brand-new woman, playing bass guitar in an all-woman punk band and plunging into a head-spinning relationship with a pierced, tattooed man called Howard. From Publishers Weekly When Mary Bellanova finds her live-in boyfriend, Primo, dead on the couch in her New York City apartment, she is catapulted into a manic quest for the truth about his life in this lightweight, plot-driven, downtown grunge novel. Primo was an enigmatic drifter, author of a pornographic novel and ex-lover of an eclectic collection of girlfriends; it seems he even had a child. Mary’s own life is nothing to write home about. She’s 29 years old and has been working a succession of temp jobs while making fitful attempts at finishing a collection of short stories. On Primo’s trail, she stumbles into a series of new adventures. Economic Compulsion And Christian Ethics

Economic Compulsion And Christian Ethics

$105

Markets can often be harsh in compelling people to make unpalatable economic choices any reasonable person would not take under normal conditions. Thus workers laid off in mid-career accept lower paid jobs that are beneath their professional experience for want of better alternatives. Economic migrants leave their families and cross borders (legally or illegally) in search of a livelihood and countless Third World families rely on child labor to supplement meagre household incomes. These are examples of economic compulsion, an all-too-frequent state of affairs in which people are driven to make choices under acute economic duress. These economic ripple effects of market operations have been virtually ignored in ethical discourse because they are generally accepted to be the very mechanisms that shape the market’s much-touted allocative efficiency. Albino Barrera argues that Christian thought on economic security offers an effective framework within which to address the consequences of economic compulsion.

Things should be peachy. Junie isn’t entirely sure what her problem is. She’s just moved into a Brooklyn apartment with her cool longtime boyfriend Leon, a drummer who adores her. She flits through a string of temp jobs in funky thrift store clothes. But beneath her veneer of quirky humor there’s a nagging feeling of dissatisfaction about her life. She’s about to go bananas. When Junie meets Eliot, who is twice her age, and his cat, Alfie, at the vet’s office, she’s convinced she’s found the zest missing in her life. A burnt-out sci-fi writer in search of a muse, Eliot is apples to Leon’s oranges. It’s not long before Junie’s standing in his kitchen being offered a banana…and then some. Losing herself in the mayhem of a fling, Junie slowly realizes that kinky diversions are a poor distraction from what’s really eating her. Only when she stops obsessing about Eliot and starts peeling away the layers of her family’s past will she see that what she really wants has been waiting for her all along…and that her future’s ripe with possibilities.

Ensuring Inequality: The Structural Transformation of the African American Family

Ensuring Inequality: The Structural Transformation of the African American Family

$50

There is a crisis today in the American family, and this crisis has been particularly severe in the African American community. Black women are more likely than ever to bear children as teenagers, to remain single, and to raise their children in poverty. As a result, a staggering number of African-American children are growing up without fathers and living in destitution. In this insightful new book, Donna L. Franklin offers an in depth account of the history and development of the African American family, revealing why the marriage and family experiences of African-Americans differs from those of white America, and highlighting the cultural and governmental forces that have combined to create this divide and to push the black family to the edge of catastrophe. In Ensuring Inequality, Franklin traces the evolution of the black family from slavery to the present, showing the cumulative effects of centuries of historical change. She begins with a richly researched account of the impact of slavery on the black family, finding that slavery not only caused extreme instability and suffering for families, but established a lasting pattern of poverty which made the economic advantages of marriage unattainable. She provides a sharp critique of the policies of the Freedmen’s Bureau during Reconstruction, and demonstrates the mixed impact of the new pattern of sharecropping. On one hand, tenant farming allowed greater autonomy than the older gang labor system, and tended to consolidate two parent families; on the other hand, it reinforced male authority, and bound African Americans in debt peonage. The twentieth century brought a host of changes for black families, and Franklin incisively examines their effects. First, black women began to move to cities in search of jobs as domestic servants, while men stayed behind to work the fields, dividing the families. Then, two world wars sparked the great migration north, as African Americans pursued employment in

Essays on the labor force and aggregate fluctuations.

Essays on the labor force and aggregate fluctuations.

$49.99

The demographic composition of the U.S. labor force has changed dramatically over the past several decades. My Dissertation examines the age distribution, the supply of skills, and the participation of women in the workforce. The first chapter postulates a connection between the age distribution and the business cycle. I develop an overlapping generations model featuring search frictions and productivity shocks to present the theory. Chapter 2 studies the supply of high-skill workers and also relies on a labor matching model. In the model, firms react to changes in the distribution of skills by creating jobs designed specifically for high-skill workers. The new matches are more profitable and less likely to break apart. In quantitative simulations, the model economies in the first two chapters replicate a substantial portion of the recent moderation in cyclical output volatility. The findings suggest an important role for demographics in determining the magnitude of aggregate fluctuations. The third chapter is joint work with Daniele Coen-Pirani and Alexis Leon. We estimate the effect of household appliance ownership on the labor force participation rate of married women using micro-level data. The diffusion of household appliances can account for about one-third of the increase in married women’s labor force participation rates observed during the 1960′s according to our results.

 Headhunters

Headhunters

$19.95

Headhunters — third-party agents paid a fee by companies for locating job candidates — perform a unique sales role. The product they sell is people, matching candidates with jobs and companies with candidates. Headhunters affect the professional lives of thousands of employees every day, and their work has a profound, though hidden, effect on the employment picture in the United States. William Finlay and James E. Coverdill draw on interviews with and observations of headhunters and on analysis of headhunting training seminars, lectures, industry newsletters, and a mail survey of headhunting firms. The result is a frank and sometimes unsettling portrait of the aims, attitudes, and tactics of practitioners. The payment of fees has shifted from candidates to employers, and recruiters now find people to fit jobs rather than the other way around. Finlay and Coverdill address what they feel is a serious lack of research about the work headhunters do and how they do it. Their book is built around three major questions: What advantages do employers derive from using third-party agents to handle candidate search and recruitment? How are headhunters able to accomplish the double sale ( selling candidates to employers and employers to candidates)? What criteria do headhunters use for selecting candidates? In the process, Finlay and Coverdill link their findings to larger issues of institutional and historical context, revealing the economic and political reasons clients use headhunters, demonstrating how headhunters manipulate clients and candidates, and assessing the impact of headhunters’ actions on hiring decisions.
